Pupillage - THE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR 2018/19

The Numbers
Award £65,000. This split £43,350 in respect of the 'first' six months and £21,650 in respect of the 'second' six months.
Draw down We allow prospective pupils to draw down up to £25,000 in the year before commencing pupillage. Any advance is accounted for across the duration of the pupillage.
Pupils Up to 3 twelve month pupillages commencing Autumn 2018. Up to 1 deferred pupillage to start Autumn 2019.
How to Apply
Process Applications are made through the Pupillage Gateway. Our interviews will be held on 17-18 March 2017. Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a piece of legal written work in advance of the interview.
Requirements Outstanding intellectual ability, typically although not invariably evidenced by a first class degree (or predicted first). We prefer our applicants to have completed, or arranged to undertake, a minipupillage with chambers. Please note that deadlines apply for mini-pupillage applications.

Why 20 Essex Street?
The work You will be working with barristers at the top of their profession in a highly successful and friendly set at the cutting edge of commercial, EU, shipping and public international law. Increasingly we act in public law cases, particularly human rights.
The year We treat our pupils well and it is our aim to give them the best possible training, including advocacy exercises with detailed feedback, to succeed at the Bar. Read about one of our junior tenants' pupillage year.
The hours We expect you to work hard during the normal working week, but will not allow you to work late, at weekends, or to take work home. Such matters are set out in our pupillage policy.
Retention In the last three years, 80% of our pupils have gone on to become tenants. We believe those are far better odds than many of our competitors. We will never tell a pupil that they are good enough but that they will not be offered a tenancy because there is no space in chambers or that in a less competitive year they would have been taken on.
Travel Right from the start of tenancy there is the option to travel worldwide, from Hong Kong to Washington, and Oslo to Bermuda. We also have an annexe in Singapore.
Other Types Of Application 2nd/3rd Sixes: We occasionally offer second and third sixes. Opportunities are advertised via the central pupillage website & the Bar Council third six vacancies website. Applications are via CV and covering letter to the Pupillage Secretary. Applications are treated in the strictest confidence.
Exemptions If you are an established practitioner (such as a transferring solicitor) with exemption from the vocational stage of training and at least a partial exemption from the professional stage (i.e. pupillage) you may apply in the first instance to our Recruitment Committee.
Still Require More Information? Please E mail: pupillage [at] 20essexst [dot] com setting out your query and we will get back to you.
