Members of chambers pride themselves on being modern, commercial and user-friendly, while at the same time being staunch believers in traditional values such as integrity and discretion. Every member of chambers and its staff will strive to provide you with an outstanding level of service.

Our members

There are currently 67 barrister members of chambers, 20 of whom are Queen's Counsel (Queen's Counsel is a mark to signify particular excellence in advocacy amongst more senior members of the Bar of England and Wales). A further 18 senior members practise exclusively as arbitrators and mediators under the auspices of all the major arbitration and mediation bodies.

Some members of chambers are able to work in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Greek and Chinese (Mandarin).

Our work

In addition to the advisory work done by all barrister members at 20 Essex Street Chambers, our practices involve the preparation and conduct of litigation before a wide range of courts and tribunals including:

  • The High Court (and in particular the Commercial Court)
  • The Court of Appeal
  • The Supreme Court (formerly the House of Lords)
  • European courts and tribunals (in particular the ECJ and the European Court of Human Rights)
  • Courts in other foreign jurisdictions
  • Domestic arbitration tribunals (including LMAA, LCIA, FOSFA and GAFTA)
  • International arbitration tribunals (including ICC, LCIA and SIAC)
  • International tribunals such as the ICJ and the Dispute Settlement Panels of the World Trade Organisation.
