Lord Griffiths was called to the Bar in 1949 and appointed to Queen’s Counsel in 1964. In 1971 he was appointed to the High Court of Justice, between 1973-74 the Judge of National Relations Court, 1980 to the Court of Appeal and as Privy Councillor before being appointed to the House of Lords in 1985.
He has also had a number of legal professional appointments. He was a Treasurer of the Bar Council between 1968-1969, Member of the Advisory Council on Penal Reform between 1967-70, member of the Lord Chancellors Law Reform Committee between 1976-85 and Vice-Chairman of the Parole Board between 1976-77. He was also President of the Senate of the Four Inns of Court and the Bar between 1976-84, member of the Civil Justice Review between 1987-90 and visitor of the University of Wales in 1990. More recently he was appointed Chairman of the Lord Chancellor's Committee on Legal Education and Conduct between 1991-93, Treasurer of the Inner Temple in 1992 and member of the Mediation Panel on the Maxwell Pensioners Trust in 1993. Lord Griffiths was a member of the Anglo-American Exchange between 1977 and 1989; has lectured at the Admiralty Law Institute at Tulane University, Louisiana on Product Liability Law; on induction as a honorary fellow, in 1988 addressed American College of Trial Lawyers in California; addressed the American Institute of Judicial Administration in 1985; spoke on numerous occasions during the 1987 Appellate Conference and Bar Association Meeting in San Francisco. Lord Griffiths currently accepts appointment as an arbitrator and mediator in international and domestic commercial and other disputes.
