Julian Kenny has been in practice at 20 Essex Street since 1998. He specialises in commercial law. He is recommended by Chambers & Partners Guide 2009 as a leading junior in international arbitration, shipping and commodities and by the Legal 500 2008 as a leading junior in commodities.

Specialisations: 

Shipping

He has a wide experience of chartering and carriage of goods disputes. He has been instructed in ship sale and ship mortgage disputes, as well as salvage, towage and general average claims. He has also acted in brokers' and valuers' negligence claims.

Commodities

He has acted in a broad range of commodities disputes - from refined white sugar to coal. He has particular experience of disputes arising from fraudulent trading. He has also experience of futures and derivatives contracts.

Insurance and reinsurance

His practice covers all types of insurance and reinsurance litigation, but he specialises in political and credit risk insurance and in marine insurance.

General commercial

He is often instructed in general commercial cases. He acted for Maximilian von Habsburg, the Archduke of Hungary and Prince of Austria, in a joint venture dispute; for a German manufacturer in relation to an agreement to supply ticket machines for the Pennsylvania lottery; and for a Spanish bank in a claim arising from the theft of a million pounds' worth of blank travellers' cheques at Heathrow Airport.

Interim proceedings

He has experience of obtaining and discharging freezing orders, orders for the preservation of property and evidence, and anti-suit injunctions.

Education and Career: 

At Magdalen College, Oxford, he was awarded a 1st Class degree in English Literature, winning the Magdalen College Finals Prize in English.

At City University, he got the Diploma in Law with Distinction, winning the Council of Legal Education prize for the highest marks in the year.

At the Inns of Court School of Law, he passed the BVC with the grade of 'outstanding' and a Certificate of Honour.

He was the Atkin Senior Scholar at Gray's Inn and won the Mackaskie prize.

In 1999, he was a tutor in International Trade Law at the Inns of Court School of Law.

Between 2000 and 2002, he was a tutor in International Arbitration Law at Pepperdine University's London campus.
