Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Communities (January 1986 - October 2003). President of the Court (October 1994 - October 2003). A Professor at the University of Granada from 1983 to 2003, on special leave since 1986.

Education and Career: 

Professor of International Law at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid since December 2003. Born in Gijón (Asturias) 26 May 1946, he has worked as an Assistant, a Lecturer and an Assistant Professor at the Universities of Ovido, Freiburg in Breisgau, Autónoma de Madrid and Complutense de Madrid. In 1982 he was appointed Professor of International Law at the University of Extremadura. Gil Carlos is an Honorary Bencher of Gray's Inn, London and King's Inns, Dublin, and a Honorary Fellow, Society of Advanced Legal Studies, London. Also Académico Honorario of the Academia Asturiana de Jurisprudencia 1998) and Diploma Honoris Causa of the Rumanian Academy (2002).

Professor of International Law at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid since December 2003.Editor of the Revista de Derecho Comunitario Europeo, and a Member of the Advisory Boards of various law reviews.

Appointments and Society Memberships: 

Member of the Supervisory Board of the Max-Planck Institute of International Public Law and Comparative Law of Heidelberg since 1990.
