David Barniville SC

David was called to the Bar of Ireland in 1990 and became a Senior Counsel in Ireland in October 2006. He is a Bencher of the Honorable Society of King’s Inns in Dublin. David was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2016 as a member of Middle Temple.

David practises mainly in the areas of commercial law (including company, contract, European Union, competition and insurance law), administrative law, regulatory law, product liability and professional negligence. Cases David has acted as counsel in have been heard in the High Court, Supreme Court, Court of Justice of the European Union, General Court of the European Union and European Court of Human Rights.

In mediations and arbitrations David is able to act in the capacity of counsel, mediator or arbitrator. He is a CEDR Accredited Mediator and regularly acts in mediations and arbitrations (both domestic and international) in a wide range of cases. David has received appointments as arbitrator from several international institutions such as the ICC International Court of Arbitration and the LCIA.

David currently serves in a number of prestigious positions, including as the Bar’s nominee on the newly established Legal Services Regulatory Authority in Ireland; Chairman of Irish Rule of Law International; Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s Forum for Barristers and Advocates; Deputy Leader of the European Circuit (of the Bars of England and Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland); Co-Chair of the Irish Chapter of the New York State Bar Association; Vice-Chairman of the Irish Sports Council’s Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel and Vice President of Arbitration Ireland.

Previously David served as Chairman of the Council of the Bar of Ireland (2014-2016); member of the Board of the Courts Service in Ireland and of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board; Vice-Chairman of the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for Ireland; member of the Legal Aid Board; member of the Contracts Awards Committee of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.  

David is a Fellow of a number of different international and United States trial lawyer groups, including the International Society of Barristers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and is a member of the American Counsel Association.

David is Adjunct Professor in Commercial Law, Administrative Law and Product Liability Law at the University of Limerick, Ireland.
