20 Essex Street Chambers' work is varied but is essentially concerned with international disputes between, and providing legal advice for, companies and businesses and for state and public authorities. Clients come from a wide range of industries and public sectors.
Members of 20 Essex Street Chambers are very experienced in litigation and regularly appear as advocates in the House of Lords (now the Supreme Court), the Court of Appeal and the High Court (especially in the Commercial Court), as well as before the International Court of Justice, the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights and the dispute panel of the World Trade Organisation.
Members of 20 Essex Street Chambers also have considerable experience of arbitration work of all kinds, both as advocates and as arbitrators. Members appear regularly before various trade tribunals such as GAFTA, RSA, IGPA, in maritime and insurance arbitrations, in public international law cases (ICJ and ICSID) and in international commercial arbitrations of all kinds, including ICC, LCIA and SIAC arbitrations. They also conduct many arbitration applications and appeals and have close knowledge of the workings of the Arbitration Act 1996.
The set also has a number of specialist Arbitrator and Mediator members including a former Lord Justices of the Court of Appeal, distinguished former members of chambers and former senior partners of law firms based in Hong Kong, London, Paris, Melbourne, Singapore, Toronto and Washington.
All senior members and most junior members of chambers accept appointments as arbitrators.
