Donald M. McRae

Donald McRae is the Hyman Soloway Professor of Business and Trade Law, and former Dean in the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law, at the University of Ottawa and is a member of the UN International Law Commission. He has advised the Government of Canada and has been counsel for Canada in several fisheries and boundary arbitrations.  He has also been counsel in other maritime boundary arbitrations and has advised a number of governments on maritime boundary issues. He was the Chief Negotiator for Canada for the Pacific Salmon dispute 1998-2000.  He has advised the Government of New Zealand on international trade law matters. 

Professor McRae was the Chair of the first dispute settlement panel set up under Chapter l8 of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement and was a member of other panels under Chapters 18 and 19 of that Agreement.  He was Chair of the first dispute settlement panel set up under the U.S.-Israel Free Trade Agreement and was also a member of the first dispute settlement panel set up under Chapter 20 of NAFTA.  He is currently a member of the Indicative List of Panellists for the World Trade Organization and has appeared as counsel before WTO panels and the Appellate Body and been a member of several WTO panels.  He has also been a member and chair of several investment dispute tribunals under NAFTA, ICSID and elsewhere. He is currently one of counsel for Thailand before the International Court of Justice over the interpretation of the 1962 Temple of Preah Vihear decision. Professor McRae has published widely on international law, law of the sea and international trade law.

He is a member of the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law, and of the Journal of International Economic law, and is the former Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Yearbook of International Law and a former President of the Canadian Council on International Law. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and an associate member of the Institut de droit international. He is a door tenant at 20 Essex Street.
