Francisco Orrego Vicuña has had a distinguished International academic and professional legal career with extensive experience as an International arbitrator. He has presided over arbitration panels in Venezuela, Spain, Egypt, Hungary, Argentina,Turkey and Chile.The cases he has heard include disputes involving Commercial Law, Investments, Maritime Law, Environmental Protection Law, International territorial boundaries and International Trade.These have included both ad hoc and Institutional arbitrations under the rules of LCIA, UNCITRAL and ICC.

He is a member of the Panels of Conciliators and of Arbitrators of the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes by appointment of the Chairman of the Administrative Council of ICSID and has presided over 10 ICSID tribunal panels.

He is a member of panels of most leading arbitration organisations including the LCIA, the ICC and UNCITRAL.

Born in Santiago, Chile in 1942, he was educated in Madrid, Cairo and Santiago. He attended Law School at the University of Chile and was admitted to legal practice in 1965. He gained his Ph.D. in International Law at the LSE. Francisco has taught general courses on International Law and specialised courses on International Environmental Law, International Economic Law, Settlement of Disputes in Trade and Investments, and the Law of the Sea. He was Director of the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile, is Professor of the Institute and won the National Award of the Government of Chile for Humanities and Social Sciences in 2001.

Has lectured or participated in conferences at the invitation of numerous institutions around the world and has participated in research programs or advisory functions with institutions such as the Latin American Free Trade Association, Central American Common Market, Organization of American States, Inter-American Development Bank, Inter-American Council on Commerce and Production and the United Nations.

Francisco Orrego Vicuña was President of the World Bank Administrative Tribunal from 2001 to 2004 and has been a Judge at this Tribunal since 1992. He is currently Professor of International Law at the Law School of the University of Chile and is the co-Director of the University of Chile-University of Heidelberg joint LL. M. Program on International Law,Trade and Investments.

Francisco has published extensively. He is the author and co-author of over 60 books on international arbitration, dispute resolution and maritime law, as well as over 70 articles in major international law journals and publications. Five of his books have been published by Cambridge University Press.
