Nicholas Legh-Jones practised at the commercial Bar from 1969 to 2005. He specialised in commercial law, in particular the carriage of goods by sea, the international sale of goods, insurance and reinsurance and arbitration law. He appeared before commercial arbitrators, the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords. He also sat as an arbitrator in commercial disputes.

He graduated from Oxford University with an MA in Modern History in 1964 and in Jurisprudence in 1966. He was elected Kennedy Scholar of Lincoln’s Inn in 1968 and Eldon Scholar of Oxford University in 1969.

He taught at the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1966-67 and as a lecturer in law at New College, Oxford from 1967 – 71.

He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1968 and practised at 20 Essex Street (formerly 3 Essex Court). He took silk in 1987.

While in practice he regularly appeared as advocate in commercial arbitrations conducted under commodity trade association rules, such as those of GAFTA, FOSFA and RSA, as well as under the auspices of the ICC and LMAA. He also acted as an arbitrator, both sole and as a panel member, in arbitrations conducted under ICC, LCIA and LMAA Rules and in ad hoc references concerning insurance and reinsurance disputes.

In 1998 he was appointed a visiting professor in maritime law at King’s College London, and has taught marine insurance and carriage of goods by sea to graduate students reading for the LL.M. degree in the University of London. He is a Supporting Member of the LMAA and a member of the Managing Committee of ARIAS (UK).

Co-author of MacGillivray & Parkington on Insurance, 6 th, 7 th and 8 th editions. Editor in Chief of the 9 th edition, retitled MacGillivray on Insurance Law (1977), and General Editor of the current 10 th edition (2002). Contributor to Cambridge Law Journal, Law Quarterly Review and Modern Law Review 1968-71.
